Honouring Jackie Robinson: A Legacy That Lives On
April 15th marks Jackie Robinson Day—an annual celebration of a man whose courage and conviction forever changed the game of baseball. On this day in 1947, Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s colour barrier when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers, wearing number 42.
At Toronto Playgrounds Baseball, we reflect on Jackie’s historic impact—not only as an elite athlete, but as a symbol of progress, resilience, and hope. His journey reminds us that sport has the power to challenge injustice, build community, and create opportunity.
We believe every child deserves a chance to play the game they love in an inclusive and welcoming environment. Jackie Robinson’s legacy fuels our commitment to equity, diversity, and access at every level of our organization—from the dugout to the boardroom.
Today, we honour Jackie. Tomorrow, we continue the work.
