Celebrating Jackie Robinson Day at Toronto Playgrounds Baseball

April 15th marks Jackie Robinson Day, a moment to honour a legacy that continues to shape the game and our communities.

In 1947, Jackie Robinson stepped onto the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League Baseball’s colour barrier while wearing number 42. His courage didn’t just change baseball, it helped spark a broader movement toward equity and inclusion in sport and society.

At Toronto Playgrounds Baseball, we reflect on Jackie’s impact not only as a trailblazing athlete, but as a symbol of resilience, leadership, and meaningful change. His story continues to remind us that sport can be a powerful force for belonging, opportunity, and connection.

That legacy shows up in our work every day, from creating more opportunities for girls in baseball, to supporting young players through partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto, to ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of a child stepping onto the field.

We’re proud of the progress, and we know there’s more to do.

Today, we honour Jackie. Every day, we carry his legacy forward.
