Black History Month – Negro League Legacy Series

This Black History Month, Toronto Playgrounds Baseball is proud to honour the history behind our Bantam & Varsity team names. Our teams, including the Monarchs, Crawfords, Homesteads, Eagles, Buckeyes, Stars, Wolves, Pilots, and Grey Sox, are inspired by historic Negro League and Black baseball teams whose players shaped the game through resilience, excellence, and courage.

At a time when Black athletes were excluded from Major League Baseball, the Negro Leagues created space for incredible talent, community pride, and innovation. Their legacy continues to influence the game we love today.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing stories about these teams and the legendary players connected to them, helping our athletes understand the history behind the jerseys they wear and celebrating the impact of Black baseball on our sport and our communities.

Because at Toronto Playgrounds, baseball is more than a game , it’s about learning, inclusion, and honouring those who paved the way.

Stay tuned as we highlight the legacy behind our teams!
